The Nursing and Midwifery Council is participating in this year’s Nightingale Challenge – the great global movement to develop emerging leaders in nursing and midwifery.
About the Nightingale Challenge
The Nightingale Challenge asks every health employer around the world to provide leadership and development training for a group of nurses and midwives (aged 35 or under) during 2020.
Why now? 2020 has been declared by the World Health Organisation as the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. 2020 also marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale: nurse, innovator, reformer and leader of improved health care.

How are we getting involved?
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of New South Wales has a regulatory function, managing complaints about the conduct, performance and health of registered health practitioners and students in NSW.
To align with this function, we have set up the Professional Regulation in Practice Program (PRiPP) as a part of the Nightingale Challenge. The Program will provide an opportunity for 18 nurses and midwives, nominated by local health districts, to have a three-day, practical regulatory experience in the Nursing and Midwifery Council of New South Wales.
Participants will gain:
- Insights into how regulation operates and interacts with the workplace
- Direct exposure to the Council
- Continuing professional development
- Professional networking
- Recognition of risks and how to intervene early
- Knowledge of how to develop culture safely
