Develop your skills as a leader in nursing or midwifery with the Nightingale Challenge

As part of the Nightingale Challenge, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of NSW is offering an opportunity for two emerging leaders in nursing and midwifery to participate in a paid development program for three months, starting on the 15th February 2021.

The program will give participants hands-on experience in the regulation of their profession and an enhanced perspective that is fundamental for senior roles in nursing and midwifery.

 

What will the program consist of?

The successful applicants will engage in a wide range of activities, spanning all aspects of the Council, including:

  • training on the professional practice framework and the legal framework for managing complaints in NSW
  • managing cases and assessing risk related to new complaints
  • preparing briefs and reports for committees and panels
  • attending Council meetings and Tribunal hearings
  • communicating with stakeholders: practitioners, complainants, employers, supervisors, case managers and other regulators
  • supporting decision-making committees and panels

The central piece of work will be the development of a project for implementation once participants return to their workplace. Participants will work with the Executive Officer and Project Officer to develop a project plan that embeds a stronger understanding and application of the professional standards within their organisation or unit.

 

What will I gain from participating?

Participants will gain a holistic view of the regulation of their profession and the following skills/attributes:

  • An advanced understanding of the professional standards, how they are applied and how they apply to practical situations in the workplace
  • An enhanced ability to assess risk and make sound decisions
  • An excellent understanding of how to manage professional practice errors, lapses and breakdowns in the workplace
  • Strategies to develop and nurture safe working cultures
  • Project management, planning and evaluation
  • An understanding of the proper referral of cases to regulators
  • Connections with key personnel in the profession

Will I be paid?

Yes, the position has a set pay rate at Nurse/Midwife Manager grade 3 year 1.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of NSW’s office is located at Level 6 North Wing, 477 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000.

Who can apply?

Registered nurses (Div 1) or midwives – with general registration (not subject to conditions, restrictions, reprimand or caution) with:

  • More than 5-years recent nursing / midwifery practice
  • Manager / potential manager and/or leader in practice development or practice management area
  • An interest in regulation leadership, professional standards and patient safety

Applicants must have support from their employer to be released into this position for 3 months.
